Tourette Syndrome Essays

I slowly began playing on my bass the Bach piece I had worked on for the past year, trying to focus my concentration.

I wondered to myself how I had gotten here; a junior at Noble and Greenough, one of the best independent schools in Massachusetts, let alone the country, where I was at that very moment performing a piece I swore I could never learn in front of the entire school.

Similarly, involuntary swearing (coprolalia) can occur in a subgroup of people with TS.

People with TS can sometimes suppress tics for a short time, but eventually tension mounts to the point where the tic escapes.

Use of stimulants can be helpful when there are also Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms but careful monitoring for any increase in tick symptoms is recommended.

Relaxation techniques and biofeedback may be useful in alleviating stress.Tics typically fluctuate with a waxing and waning course and would usually worsen in stressful situations and improve when the person relaxes or is absorbed in an activity.Tourette syndrome often is accompanied by other behavioural or emotional problems.Parents and teachers usually pay more attention to behaviour, learning and attention problems.Sometimes tics are mistaken for other medical problems. It makes us laugh because it’s terribly uncomfortable for all, and particularly for Number 3. Now, imagine that you’re in grade school, and that there’s something about you that is so obvious, other kids can’t help but notice it, question it, and, sadly, make fun of it.We’re all terribly self-conscious at this age, wanting more than anything to fit in with our peers. That’s hard enough as it is, but it’s even harder for kids who have Tourette’s disorder, which is characterized by uncontrollable “tics,” or sudden, non-rhythmic movements and/or vocalizations that appear to worsen with stress.Such was the case for Dan Greenberg, who developed Tourette’s in fourth grade. There is no cure for TS; however, the condition in many individuals improves as they mature.Individuals with TS can expect to live a normal life span.
