Carnegie Mellon also offers a program called Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology (IDe ATe).

This program gives students the opportunity to study design as it relates to one of the other disciplines offered by the university.

After the first year, students can choose to focus on two of the three tracks.

This focus can be narrowed to provide a specialization in one area in the final years, or the student can continue to take courses in both specialties.

The BDes designation distinguishes design as a separate discipline.

Carnegie Mellon offers three tracks for its Bachelor of Design degree: Communications, Products, and Environments.

Completion of the School of Visual Arts Foundation Program is required before students can enroll in the graphic design program. Once accepted, visual communication design students learn skills such as typography, web and mobile design, human-centered design, and hand lettering.
