Participants can go through the course materials and assignments at their own pace, and often earn a Statement of Accomplishment by completing the assignments.

These courses will typically include a way to trigger the system to process and finalize your particular grade in the course, and will result in a Statement of Accomplishment being generated if the requirements were met.

Courses that have no end date or one that is far in the future are called "self-paced" or "self-study" courses.

After a successful pilot during the 2014-2015 academic year, Canvas was adopted to replace Course Work as Stanford’s primary LMS. To find out which option is the best one for your class, request a consultation with staff at the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL).

Canvas is an all-in-one system that lets you post announcements and reading materials, manage class assignments, run discussion forums, assign grades, and more; the website is just one of many system components. Some schools and departments host web pages on their own servers or use third-party solutions.

All of these tasks can be completed at your convenience – there's no need to "come to class" at a particular time of day, although some assignments do have due dates.

Deadlines and due dates display in local time and use a 24-hour clock, so be sure to carefully check the time at which an assignment is due.

Try in-session courses for live lectures and discussions from Stanford professors or participate in self-study courses at your own pace.

For those interested in professional education, tuition-based Stanford courses for credit in law, business and engineering are available for licensed professionals, as well as occasional free non-credit courses for the general public.
