The Anzac Centenary (2014-2018) is Australia’s most important time of national commemoration and reflection.
This period marks 100 years since our involvement in the First World War. Bean once wrote that the Spirit of ANZAC “stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance that will never own defeat.” The ANZAC themes are known as: compassion, courage, duty, integrity, mateship, resilience, teamwork and toughness.
Each year we encourage Colorado high school seniors from across the state to write a 1,500-word essay about the importance of the civil jury system as the guardian of American rights and liberties.
Partnering with the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) over the past 8 years, we have awarded $92,000 in scholarships to college-bound students.
Simpson’s lifelong expatriate status has influenced his poetry, and he often uses the lives of ordinary Americans in order to critically investigate the myths the country tells itself.
Although he occasionally revisits the West Indies of his childhood, he always keeps one foot in his adopted country.Simpson was born in Jamaica, the son of Rosalind (née Marantz) and Aston Simpson, a lawyer. His mother was born in Russia (Simpson did not find out that he was Jewish until his teenage years).During World War II, from 1943 to 1945 he was a member of the elite 101st Airborne Division and would fight in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. At Bastogne bitterly cold temperatures had to be endured while the 101st Division was surrounded by enemy forces for days. After the end of the war he attended the University of Paris.Flights will be offered as return flights from Adelaide and will include two nights’ accommodation. The winner will also be asked to write a Think Piece of their trip to the Australian War Memorial to be featured on the Anzac Centenary Website. The Anzac Centenary aims to honour the sacrifice and service of all who have served from the original ANZACS on the shores of Gallipoli, up to the service men and women currently serving at home and abroad. The Anzac Centenary Reflections Competitions is looking for entries that reflect some or all of these themes in a creative, engaging and impacting way through the medium of film, photography, short story and poetry. This period recognises the generations of Australian men and women who have defended our values and freedoms in wars, conflicts and peace operations throughout a Century of Service. The creative entries should underpin an overall theme of commemoration, reflection and honour, paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. At Burg Simpson, we recognize the importance of access to a good education. In 2012, we launched the Burg Simpson Scholarship Competition.
