UXBRIDGE — It will be an education of a different kind for Hillary Brown as the Grade 7 student heads to Queen’s Park for a stint as a legislative page.
Each legislative page earned their spot in the program by submitting an application that included an essay outlining their achievements, involvements and suitability for the program.
Each page must study and learn the faces, names and locations of the 124 MPPs as well as the names of all the cabinet ministers before arriving at Queen’s Park for their first day.
As the day progresses, pages are involved in a number of activities including: delivering messages for the MPPs in chamber, taking classes in the legislative process and mathematics, and meeting with key legislative players such as the party leaders and the Speaker of the house. The legislative page program is open to high achieving students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in current affairs, have an academic average of 80 per cent or higher and get along well with their peers and adults.
Applications for the legislative page program are accepted for two deadlines each year.
They play an important role in the Legislature, acting as messengers in the Legislative Chamber, meeting with politicians and officials, learning how laws are made and how the Province of Ontario is governed.
While at Queen's Park, they are taught legislative process and receive various assignments to develop their language skills.“I’m also looking forward to meeting lots of people and hopefully making a few new friends, and just learning about what’s going on with the government right now.” The application process required Hillary to draft an essay outlining her achievements, involvement and suitability for the program.“I said that I’m good working with a team and I really like to learn new things, and I think there’s going to be a lot of that,” she said. The Legislative Page Program operates only when Parliament is in session. For more information, please call 416-325-7457 or visit the Ontario Legislature website.Pages are also tutored in mathematics, and on Fridays, they participate in special educational activities or field trips.Ontario's Legislative Page Program is a non-residential program. His term of duty will commence on Nov 12 and may last anywhere up to five weeks, depending on the parliamentary session. Each Legislative Page earned their spot in the program by submitting an application that included an essay outlining their achievements, involvements and suitability for the program.Jack Heikkila, a Grade 8 student at O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School, has been selected to serve as a Legislative Page at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto.During his term of duty, Heikkila will serve as a messenger on the floor of the Legislative Chamber, meet key parliamentary figures and learn about Ontario’s parliamentary system of government.
