Most other types of essays, whether compare/contrast, argumentative, or narrative, have thesis statements that take a position and argue it.
Whether you’re writing an argumentative paper, an informative essay, or a compare/contrast statement, you need a thesis.
Without a thesis, your argument falls flat and your information is unfocused.
The papers also demonstrate the use of MLA style to document sources and the formatting of the margins, line spacing, and other physical attributes of a printed paper.
The MLA’s guidelines on formatting papers appear elsewhere on this site.
The MLA Handbook does not provide guidelines for formatting a thesis or dissertation—or for preparing the parts of such a project, like a preface, dedication, or acknowledgments page—because most schools maintain their own formatting requirements.
Although the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, out of print since 2016, summarized some of these requirements, it did so only in a very general way.
A good practice is to put the thesis statement at the end of your introduction so you can use it to lead into the body of your paper.
This allows you, as the writer, to lead up to the thesis statement instead of diving directly into the topic.
If you place the thesis statement at the beginning, your reader may forget or be confused about the main idea by the time he/she reaches the end of the introduction.
Remember, a good introduction conceptualizes and anticipates the thesis statement.
