Start by thinking about the main focus of your essay, whether it's your position on an issue or analysis of a given argument.

Try to find a single sentence that will summarize your essay.Mentally organizing your thoughts in this fashion will help you type your essay more quickly.This stage should emphasize final editing and proofreading, and you should resist the temptation to add any new content to your essay.First, read the prompt and determine if you’re being instructed to provide your own opinion on evaluate someone else’s opinion.When the GRE wants your opinion, it will classify the question as “Analyzing an Issue.” When the GRE is looking for your reaction and break-down of somebody else’s idea, the test will refer to that as “Analyzing an Argument.” By searching for this language on your test, you can ensure you’re answering the right question and setting yourself up to receive as many points as possible.It is also not an assessment of talent in creative writing, and even the most gifted writer will falter if s/he fails to focus on meeting the criteria required for a high score.The Analytical Writing Assessment section of the GRE consists of two separately timed tasks: GRE assessors consider analysis, supporting points, clarity of meaning, variety in sentence structure, vocabulary, and conventions of usage to arrive at their scoring decisions, and successful GRE essays make effective use of all of these devices.The Analytical Writing Assessment gauges your ability to understand complex ideas and rhetorical techniques and to express that understanding in written form.It does not test your knowledge of any specific academic discipline.Providing your reader with this structure will help them orient themselves in your response and make your work stand out as well-organized.The best way to demonstrate your intelligence, strengthen your arguments, and blow readers away is to make sure you support every single thing you write with evidence or examples.
