Give the class an interesting reading or show a short video about a topic that is ripe for varied opinions.

I like to show this seven-minute clip about Auto Tune from Nova: https:// Facilitate a short class discussion on the topic to get them thinking about the pros and cons. One by one, go through the points of a good thesis statement.

For the Auto Tune example, we talk about whether an artist who uses Auto Tune in a live concert or on a recording is deceiving the audience. Collect all the papers, shuffle them, and redistribute. For example, say, "Does it contain a clear opinion? (I like to give out colorful Sharpie pens.) I've done this for several quarters now, and the students always show improvement, I think because they are so engaged in the process, whether in writing their own thesis or evaluating others' thesis statement.

We talk about the common use, the ethics, and whether the audience should be aware of its use. Ask them to write a thesis statement about the topic (as if they were going to use it for an essay). Ask students to carefully read the thesis on the paper they have. " Have the students consider the thesis and sit down if it does not meet the criteria. When you have only a few students left standing (or have gone through all the criteria), have the class vote on the best thesis still remaining. If you need a lesson for writing a thesis statements, here's the one I use.

As I showed each issue, for instance each student had to choose whether they were in favor or against the issue and move towards the end of the board that corresponded to that position.

Then, in the groups that formed (in favor or against), they were asked to discuss the issue in order to find three arguments to support their position. Then, someone from each side (for or against) was asked to explain the groups position and arguments and finally read the thesis statement. I really liked this activity because it allowed students to share experiences, their positions and anecdotes. It was truly a simple activity to plan and very fun to do.I printed them in color paper and cut them up (see picture). In class, I taped the IN FAVOR sign on one side of the board and the AGAINST sign on the other side. It's a Power Point presentation, along with handouts and worksheets.Thesis statements are statements that are arguable and that state a writer’s stance on a subject.Nevertheless, I’ve come up with a couple of ideas that I consider are worth sharing, just in case there are teachers out there feeling stuck like I have, and also, so I won’t forget them.Today I’ll share a warm-up activity I came up with for getting my students to understand how to make argumentative thesis statements for an essay they will be writing the following weeks. I typed a couple of controversial issues that weren’t too sensitive and a sign for IN FAVOR and AGAINST.Use this lesson plan to help teach students about thesis statements.Define the uses of thesis statements and explore the types of writing they're used in, then use topic cards to practice writing thesis statements.
