He is writing about the sightings describing the light and the circumstances of when the ghost appeared.This is a story about a signalman who is driven “mad” by the environment of his work, away from sunlight and people.But he was not alone; a supernatural ghost decides to accompany him too. There are only two characters that really are prominent in the short story.- Introduction A mystery or ghost story is a story that contains a ghost or a supernatural element.Like in ‘The Signalman’ ghosts often appear as prophets of things to come.The Victorian era was a main development stage for the ghost story genre and it was becoming increasingly popular among readers.Setting To create suspense and tension in traditional mystery stories the setting is made to feel dangerous, threatening and to make the reader feel scared.Dickens, writing in the nineteenth century, would have had a very different audience to write for from Lively, writing in the twentieth century.Therefore, each author uses different techniques to create tension in the two pieces.Short stories were the ideal form for writers who wanted to earn some immediate money and reach a wide audience.As more people were given the chance of receiving basic education, literacy rates improved and more were able to enjoy reading....
