Critical thinking, creative thinking, and reflective practice are valued, of course, in all fields. In critical thinking we seek to scrutinize the assumptions, reasoning, and evidence brought to bear on an issue — by others and by oneself; such scrutiny is enhanced by placing ideas and practices in tension with alternatives. One activity then asks you how you might look at a problem from a different angle to produce a more creative result; others walk you through the process of using analogies or replacement techniques to invent creative solutions to problems.
Others are policy makers or personnel trainers in government, corporate, scientific, or nonprofit settings.
Some are artists, musicians, writers, journalists, and community activists.
We offer a flexible menu of face-to-face and online sessions to serve particular needs or to form a more comprehensive program.
TC² has the expertise and resources to support extended professional learning around a number of interrelated themes, all of which are geared to nurture a thinking classroom.
In these processes of transformation and transfer, CCT students have to select and adapt the ideas and tools presented by faculty with diverse disciplinary and interdisciplinary concerns.
Although each CCT course is self-contained and is open to students from other graduate programs, students matriculated in the Program benefit from extended relationships with core CCT faculty and fellow students that support their processes of learning — experimenting and taking risks in applying what they are learning, reflecting on the outcomes and revising accordingly, and building up a set of tools, practices, and perspectives that work in their specific professional or personal endeavors.Because organizations must innovate to stay alive in today's highly competitive marketplace, organizations need employees who can channel their creativity and innovation toward organizational challenges and goals. The Innovation and Critical Thinking Certificate is comprised of four courses.Key functions of creative thinking include generating alternative ideas, practices, and solutions that are unique and effective, and exploring ways to confront complex, messy, ambiguous problems, make new connections, and see how things could be otherwise. In reflective practice we take risks and experiment in putting ideas into practice, then take stock of the outcomes and revise our approaches accordingly.Participants learn to recognize numerous opportunities for embedding thinking into their daily teaching, develop their competence in teaching and assessing key intellectual tools and build on their ability to nurture a thoughtful classroom atmosphere. They develop their ability to thoughtfully integrate educational technology using six key considerations. This program helps educators improve their ability to assess thinking and to implement effective assessment strategies to promote thinking.A key theme is the effective use of critical thinking in formative and summative assessment to move the focus from seeking the right answer to the quality of the student responses. This program identifies six concepts that underpin students' ability to move beyond learning about history or geography to thinking deeply about these disciplines. It first helps you become re-acquainted with your own stores of creativity and innovation.Next, you are given a set of tools that allow you to leverage your creativity to identify and solve organizational problems. The concepts serve as entry points to problematize historical or geographical topics and also support students in thinking through the emergent issues. This program focuses on helping students learn to think for themselves and be more self-reliant learners.Educators develop expertise in implementing a five-stage approach to nurturing student self-regulation. This program develops educators' appreciation of what is required for meaningful educational engagement.
