Just click on the Anita has never seen Damian, her vampire servant, in such a state. The rising sun doesn’t usher in the peaceful death that he desperately needs.
And when Anita joins forces with her friend Edward to stop the carnage, Damian will be at their side, even if it means traveling back to the land where all his nightmares spring from...a place that couldn’t be less welcoming to a vampire, an assassin, and a necromancer: Ireland.
This is a first for me: I'm writing a review of a novel that I just couldn't force myself to finish.
Sure, Hamilton had explored the were concept before. But the werewolves had a language and hierarchy all their own and they were fascinating. Maybe this is the book where I put my foot down and say “I’m done.” This time, maybe. At this point the books aren’t self-contained at all.
24 books that take place over 6 in-universe years is too many by about half.
Born in Arkansas in 1963, Laurell has written eight Merry Gentry novels and 20 Anita Blake novels, with the latest due out in June 2011, as well as a range of other novels and an Anita Blake Marvel Comic series.
Anita Blake novel Blood Noir, the 16th in the series, debuted in the number 1 slot of the New York Times bestseller list in 2008, and more than 6 million copies of this series have been printed.Laurell's approach is to merge fantasy and horror themes with a contemporary setting, using strong female leads to battle vampires, zombies, werewolves, voodoo priestesses and a whole range of other ghouls and goblins, whilst also adding a strong dose of eroticism to the mix. The “paranormal romance” genre didn’t quite exist…or if it did, Hamilton had created it. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy a well-written sex scene. Novels that previously took place over several weeks now took place over several days. Things started to get better around book 15 or so—when I stopped buying hardbacks. But just as quickly, the books backslid, this time with the introduction of the weretigers. (And if you haven’t yet read the series you should know: there are also werelions and werebears. Every year or so I pick up the newest book, spend a week hating myself for reading about a bloated cast of characters (many of whom won’t ever change) and skipping past the sex scenes to get to the plot. This is my enormous, ever-growing list of books to read.Over at Goodreads, I have them divided further into categories, broken down into fiction and non-fiction, and then down into categories.I read the first 207 pages of this door-stop of a book, and realized that I just didn't care about the plot or the characters enough to slog through to the end (page 708).After 200 pages (a third of the way into the book), Hamilton still hadn't immersed Anita into the plot, and even though I was looking forward to this being an "Edward" novel, Basically, the pages I read consisted of an agonizingly slow and tedious review of all of the men in Anita's life (and some of the women). The vampire who created him, who subjected him to centuries of torture, might be losing control, allowing rogue vampires to run wild and break one of their kind’s few strict taboos. Some say love is a great motivator, but hatred gets the job done, too.The Blake books were described to me as “vampire crack.” Like any drug, I got my first taste for free, by borrowing my friend’s paperback reprints of books 1-9. Subsequent books spent 200 pages of a 300 page book on graphic sex scenes, leaving the remaining 100 pages for plot. Each book was still 300-500 pages, only now the story became focused on the minutia of Anita’s life. I nearly threw book 23 across the room once I finished reading it. The first 60-ish pages were a literal State of the Relationship discussion between Anita and one of the many people she’s having sex with. After 24 books I expect some character development, but the sheer slow nature of in-universe time (24 books taking place over 6 years) means nothing has happened with any speed. At some point, the author decided that breath-for-breath sex scenes were going to be the focus of the series.
