Anthem Essays Individuality

It is a sin to think words no others think-, we see that Rand believes in individualism. Individuality plays a very important role in the average person's every day life.By saying that it is a sin to write and think words alone, it shows that there is absolutely no individualism. In Anthem, Rand tells of Equality's joy when he "discovers" electricity. The Latin word Ego literally means "Man's Self," and it was the original title for the short, and powerful, science fiction novel Anthem. Ayn Rand's portrayal of a distant future is prophetic in its similarity with where today's society is heading. They also encouraged him to assume that collectivism is the way life should be and he is sinning by thinking against these ideals.

Some quotations in this story reflect many deeper ideas and show the authors true reason for writing this great novelette.

In the opening sentence of the story, "It is a sin to write this. There are many deep thoughts and words laced into Anthem's beautiful story. Throughout Anthem, Prometheus's love for light is evident. Ayn Rand wrote Anthem as a warning to those who believe in collectivist societies. The novel, Anthem, is the author's approach at explaining the significance of individuality.

This shows that Rand believes that even in such a society there are bound to be people who have their own thoughts. Mankind has been enslaved for many aspects such as race, gender, money, social status, and religion. Thus the Anthem society burned religion and spiritual beliefs along with individualism and the innovative philosophy. In Anthem, the World Council has complete authority over the population.

It also clearly demonstrates that in other places of the world today, people are oppressed for having their own thoughts, just as Equality is.

The way individualism and collectivism affect the world of Anthem and Equality are very clear. Collectivism is the name of the game in the world of Anthem. This is definitely not what the world of Anthem is based off of but Equality is definitely the spokesperson of this ideal. Products and Customers Anthem Stair Company's product lines consist of staircases and stair parts. Anthem Stair Company does not limit itself to staircases only. Anthem Stair operates under the philosophy that all customers regardless of the amount of business they bring to Anthem should all be treated with the same respect and care. Anthem Stair cares about every customer so that if a stair is needed in two days, Anthem Stair will make every effort to make that happen. Anthem Stair Company only has forty employees working in a 14,000 square foot factory. Two primary examples of this theme are the literary works by John Steinbeck and Ayn Rand, The Grapes of Wrath and Anthem, respectively. Anthem's representation of the theme is similar to The Grapes of Wrath.

In Anthem, the characters also lived in a society filled with a degree of social cruelty and inhumanity. The world described in Anthem is a primitive one, although it is set in the future. Those who break the terms of the oppression placed upon them in Anthem, are known as transgressors. This is the message Rand wished to express in Anthem. While I would not advocate her philosophy, she is an exceptional writer and I would recommend Anthem. Anthem by Ayn Rand In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many themes. In the beginning, Equality 7-2521 describes his actions, how they differed tremendously from the people in his society, and how they encouraged him to believe that he was cursed. He explains that he had always been a sinner, and had always defied the rules of the Council of Vocations, the party who distinguished laws.He states, “It is not good to feel too much joy nor to be glad that our body lives…But we Equality 7-2521 are glad to be living” (46). Considered defiant, he risks his life for individuality, no longer emphasizing over the Council’s idea of a transgression. This quote reveals that the narrator defies the law, and doesn’t want to stop because he’s gradually starting to believe that his thoughts are morally correct, regardless of the Council’s convictions. He goes on to show the Council, who strongly reject his gift.Equality 7-2521 discovers things from the “Unmentionable Times”, (times of the past before everything was forcefully collective in the story’s setting) that allow him to realize why his thoughts about happiness were indeed true.Equality 7-2521’s eventual assessment of his sin is correct because he achieves the realization that individuality is essential to the continuation of mankind, and cannot simply be removed from a person’s life.In the novel, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, the narrator lives in a dystopian population where people must refer to themselves in first person as the great “WE”, because individuality is the prominent sin.The story is written as journal entries that ultimately showed the narrator’s change of emotion, changing his ordinary course of being collective.Towards the middle of the book, Equality starts to reveal that he does not agree with the rules of the council, finding good reasons to be happy as an individual. Equality 7-2521 is gaining more independence, being careless because of his positive feelings, and fleeing from the society’s discernments of self-creativity.His first reason that gives him an idea as to what true happiness is, was falling in love with a woman, The Golden One. After recreating the power of electricity, with the astounding invention from the “Unmentionable Times”, Equality 7-2521 concludes that the invention is not a sin, but the foundation for a prosperous mankind.
